Solo Reflection for Children’s Book

The research topic we decided to use was waste produce in New York City because it was an easy topic to introduce to kids and because there was a lot of information on the topic. Writing the book itself was not complicated because most of us have nieces or nephews that are around the age range that we were aiming for. We used their books to give us an idea of  how we were going to talk about our topic. At this age range children tend to be more aware of how to clean up for themselves and why it’s important. We needed to discuss how much waste we produce daily, where our garbage goes, and how if we don’t properly throw away our trash it will negatively affect our planet. However, to make our topic engaging for children we decided to make inanimate objects have conversations with each other. For example, we see a cardboard box talking with a can, and we see an orange talking with the cardboard box. We had to introduce information from our articles but it was too difficult for a child to understand. We decided to keep it short and simple, for example in our first slide we inform the audience by saying, “I’ve heard that this city produces around 12,000 tons of trash a day”. Although the topic of pollution may be a little sad, we decided to keep our story happy because we wanted to focus on the facts rather than the story itself. As an aunt of two kids, I noticed it’s easier for them to retain information when it’s given in bits and when they’re having fun. Personally, I feel like I’m better at doing research and finding ways to properly educate a child rather than the creativity of the book. I would consider my weakness to be, not being able to put scientific information into language that children would understand. I need to become better at converting scientific explanations into simpler terms not only for children but also for the general audience. I had an idea of how the characters were gana look like how they were going to be placed, but i couldn’t find pictures online to add in the slides. Instead, one of my peers added all the animated characters and made the slides look like an actual book. For the future I want to increase my abilities with technology. Personally, I think I was good at creating the scene for the book. My niece makes me read to her, which gives me an idea on how children books are written and their storyline. Creating the storyline for the book was fairly easy considering that almost everyone contributed this aspect of the project. It was not challenging for me to correlate the information to the illustration and the plot of the story. If I need to do a similar project in the future, I believe this would be a great advantage.

The contribution of group members consisted of only half of us, while the other two were not consistent in their communication or no communication at all. Consequently, the work was divided by two of the members. I was responsible for looking at the four sources and gathering useful information to write in the book. My partner looked for images that would look appealing to the child while also showing them waste and recycling. The other two members contributed to the project by editing and writing parts of the book on the slide. Our peer, Gabby, reached out to the group on multiple occasions but most didn’t answer. So, Gabby and I decided to work on the project together since no one else was responding. We were determined to hand in our project on time since our last project was handed in late. Our group members decided to respond back two days before the due date and that is when everyone contributed to the book. However, because the group members joined in late, they were confused about what their tasks were. Giving me and my partner more work in explaining their tasks to them. For the most part me and my partner had good communication and a good understanding of what the book needed to be. Overall, I think the book is informative to children and will be appealing to them. Our goal with this book was to bring awareness to the pollution in our city. Kids love hands-on activities and this would be a great opportunity to show kids how they help the city be a cleaner place.
